P.S. 341Q is located in the rapidly growing community of Hunter’s Point, Queens, just steps away from the river and nearby ferry terminal. Currently in the construction phase, the program of the school is composed of four floors of classroom and administrative functions, with a full Gym/Auditorium program including support spaces and additional classrooms on the fourth floor. First floor is comprised of Administration, Cafeteria & ECC program, Second Floor D75 classrooms, then 2-5 classrooms on the Thiird Floor and Fourth floors with additional support resources on floors throughout the building. Due to the proximity to the river, this project presented a very high water table and Design Flood Elevation; we therefore implemented a retractable flood gate at the buiilding entrance which is below the Design Flood Elevation. Otherwise, there are no occupied spaces or critical equipment below this flood elevation. Playful, faceted facade geometry, which is thematically carried into the main entrance lobby, along with subtle, carefully considered material selections provide visual delight, activating the building exterior. This highly anticipated school with a 547 seat capacity will satisfy an immanent need for educational seats in an ‘up and coming’ neighborhood that is growing faster than the available infrastructure.
